Detoxing three times a year

Detoxing not only clears out the toxins in your body which will stave off illnesses, makes you feel and look fantastic but also gives all your internal organs a time to recover from working so hard to clear out the toxins which you consume through food, skin and breath.

Detoxing also reminds you of you good eating habits, teaches you new cooking methods and helps you kick any bad habits you may have. I  try to detox several times a year using the various types of detoxes listed below.

We will have some further details on the detoxes from nutritionists on Sustainably Healthy later this year, so please sign up for updates to receive these by email.

Types of Detoxes:
1 month full detox
Based on the 4 week ultimate detox book. This 4 weeks will flush out toxins and give your body some time without toxins to shed fat, repair cells, clear up your skin and make you feel amazing.

This is how I aim to eat every month and while following this I always feel and look better than any other detox. After1 months of this you will have noticeable changes to mind, skin, body and all your all your systems and three months you will glow.

Principles: Do not eat or drink any toxins, man made products or any foods that are difficult for the human body to digest. No animal products (meats, fish, eggs, dairy), no processed goods (sugar, chemicals etc), no wheat (pasta, bread, cake unless gluten and sugar free), no alcohol, no smoking or drugs. It is best to make everything yourself then you know exactly what you are eating!
Morning tea: Start the day with a lemon tea (from your own organic lemon). During the first week take psyllium husk (you can buy this from iherb or le bono or I can grab it for you) and then a pint of water after your tea.
Protein: Beans, nuts, lentils, chickpeas, leafy greens, soy etc. Click here for more vegan proteins
Breakfast: Instant oats with honey, dried fruit & nuts / selection of fruits / gluten free toast (make it yourself)
Morning & afternoon snack: See healthy snack blog.
Main meals: Salad, lentil or chickpea curries, vegetable/bean/lentil soups, vegetable chille con carne. click here for some vegetarian recopies
Deserts: Just go without for this month, but treat yourself to home made stuff once per week. Chocolate raw brownies, gluten free pies, home made shakes and smoothies. Recopies to come soon
Cleaning and beauty products Use natural soaps, shampoos, washing up liquid, air fresher etc, dont use the normal store ones that are full of chemicals that ultimately end up in your system and stored as fat. I only use organic products or make my own
Buy organic: Whats in my food publishes evidence on what chemicals are found in fruit and vegetables. You dont want these in you as they are stored as fat, cause cancer etc.  So at least for this detox buy organic.

10 Day Juice Reboot
Generally not recommended by dieticians but this detox reset my digestive system and I stopped getting bloated after meals. It is probably not best to do while on an intense training regime or have a lot on due to the time and effort to prepare so many juices.
Principles: You only drink juice. This will consist of around 10 difference juice recipes so that you consume all of the vegetables available to you.
Additional Benefits: It gives your digestive system a rest as it has been working 24/7 all your life This reboot may get rid of some illnesses you may have or bloating or will just make you feel good.
Protein Source: All vegetables have protein, however leafy greens such as kale and spinach have the most.  Click here for more vegan proteins

No Sugar Detox
This one allows you to eat a lot of food and focuses you on avoiding sugar. Always read the label as most things contain sugar from bread to baked beans. All refined sugars are processed and detrimental to your health including granulated, brown, palm and cane sugar. I class honey and maple syrup as good alternatives. I will never add sugar to any replace, i always replace with natural sugars. if your looking to lose fat, do not make these recipes:-)

Raw food detox
In some cases there are benefits to cooking foods but in most, cooking food kills reduces the nutritian content of the food. Also you end p adding fatty toic cooking oils. We use a dehydrater we bought from Le Bono in singapoe, this is lke an over but cooks at very low temperatures so the nutrients are retained.
Principles: Do not heat food. Check out raw food recipes  for some ideas. Also sign up as i will be posting some of my favorite raw food recopies
Additional Benefits: It gives your digestive system a rest as it has been working 24/7 all your life This reboot may get rid of some illnesses you may have or bloating or will just make you feel good.
Protein Source: All vegetables have protein, however leafy greens such as kale and spinach have the most. Also nuts are a great source. Click here for more vegan proteins

Detoxing top tips:
Before: Plan out your meals and ensure that you don't have too many dinner appointments that could tempt you to eat foods outside your detox boundaries. Instead, source restaurants that can cater for your detox. Ensure you have the required equipment.
First day: Have extra fiber with every meal (dates, flax seeds, flax oil), syillium husk supplement (take with a pint of water) which will send you to the toilet and clear out your system and toxins.
After: Slowly introduce toxins back into your system or better yet, try to not consume as many toxins in your diet from now on.
No toxins: Toxins don't only get into your system through food, they are also found in cleaning products, toiletries and in the air. So switch all of your products for natural organic products, or even  try and make you own. The toxins that come into your system through your skin, still need to be broken down by your liver and may get stored as fat, so why use them?
